Faculty of Science and Technology hold nursing practicum supervision workshop

The Zimbabwe Open University (ZOU) Faculty of Science and Technology held a BSc Nursing Science Practicum Supervision workshop at Century Towers in the capital on 28 February 2018.

The workshop was attended by Director of Nursing Services in the Ministry of Health and Child Care, Dr.  C.M.Z. Chasokela, Faculty of Science and Technology Dean, Professor T.P. Z Mpofu,  Department of Health Sciences Chairperson, Ms M Chitura, Programme Leaders, Health Sciences Regional Programme Coordinators and staff from the National Centre.

In his opening remarks, the Dean of the Faculty, Prof. Mpofu emphasized the importance of integrating theory and practice in the clinical area.  The overall objective of the workshop was to standardize the BSc Nursing Sciences practicum supervision processes in line with the new recommended global and discipline specific expected competencies and skills. This initiative augers well with ZIMCHE’s vision of harmonizing student assessment across universities.

The guest speaker, Dr. Chasokela shared with the group, the importance of practicum and clinical supervision in nursing. She emphasized on the importance of integrating skills, knowledge and attitudes essential in the provision of evidence-based care. She also recommended a dual appointment of lecturers in universities and clinical areas to ensure students have adequate supervision. The Director reiterated that ZOU was offering a good Nursing Science programme and there was need for tutors and instructors to continuously motivate students and strive to be good role models to the learners.

Mrs Dhliwayo from the Faculty of Arts and Education shared experiences and challenges of teaching practice through ODL. She focused on specific logistics and modalities that are key to the supervision process.
