Faculty Overview

The Faculty of Applied Social Sciences at Zimbabwe Open University is committed to high-quality undergraduate and graduate instruction across the social sciences. Our interdisciplinary range of programmes comprise psychology, disability studies, counselling, peace, leadership and conflict resolution, information sciences, records management and development studies. We pride ourselves on providing students with the opportunity to engage in hands-on educational experiences and apply academic concepts, strategies, and techniques to contemporary, real-world issues. Guided by the University’s 2019-2023 Strategic Plan, we have centred our efforts on innovative technology enabled teaching and learning, through Education 5.0 expanding the volume and quality of high impact research, community service, innovation and industrialisation.

The Faculty recognises that central to the university achieving its ambitions is the capability and capacity of its workforce. The Faculty therefore is committed to developing staff, building capacity and giving individuals the necessary support to deliver the university’s strategic priorities. As a Faculty our central concern is to recruit versatile academics who suit our diverse programme range.

 

Structure of the Faculty

The Dean has the vision of the Faculty. He provides strategic administrative and curriculum leadership. The Dean has oversight over the departments. The Faculty is made up of 6 departments; Psychology, Disability Studies & Special Needs Education, Counselling, Peace, Leadership & Conflict Resolution, Information Science & Records Management and Development Studies. Each department is headed by a chairperson who in addition to teaching provides operational leadership. The programme leader is mainly responsible for teaching, development of new programmes, and management of the existing programmes. The Regional Programme Coordinator is responsible for teaching, supervision of part time tutors, and coordination of learning activities at the Regional Campus.

Currently the Faculty is offering 10 bachelor’s degrees, 4 masters degrees and one postgraduate diploma. We also offer master and doctor of philosophy degrees through the Higher Degree’s Directorate. The Faculty has ambitions for expansion and our human resources are vital for the achievement of this goal. We are in the process of developing 5 new programmes, our academic staff members are linking up with the industry, commerce and development organization so that we develop programmes that respond to the needs of the nation in harmony with the government’s policies of Education 5.0 using Heritage based philosophy. We are expecting our staff to form synergizes for collaborative work with industry communities and various stakeholders in order to come up with tailor made programmes which will result in goods and services.

The Faculty, in line with the University’s strategy of innovative technology enabled electronic teaching and learning, has responded to capacity building of academic staff by enrolling them into University Information Technologies. All our full time academic staff are competent in the MyVista learning platform. The faculty is also using other platforms such as Dropbox, Twitter and Skype to enhance the learning experiences. We are now emphasising the use of electronic tutoring in all our programmes.
