Tapiwa Gwenlisa Mushonga, a graduate of the Zimbabwe Open University (ZOU), has taken the stage at the National Disability Expo 2024 with her innovative waste fabric project, showcasing her unique perspective on disability and inclusivity.
The Master of Education student in Inclusive Education and Special Needs Education at the University’s Harare/Chitungwiza Regional Campus is using her artistic talent to drive social change and promote tolerance towards people with disabilities. Her waste fabric project, created from offcuts, is a vibrant and colorful representation of her own experiences and perceptions.
Gwenlisa, who has albinism herself, uses her art as a storytelling tool to break down barriers and challenge stereotypes surrounding people with disabilities. Each of her artwork pieces carries a distinct social message, highlighting the need for equal opportunities and acceptance.
“I want to show that people with disabilities can excel just like anyone else if given the chance,” Gwenlisa said in an interview. “My project is a reflection of my own experiences and the challenges I’ve faced as a person with albinism. I believe that art can be a powerful tool for change, and I hope that my work will inspire others to embrace their uniqueness and diversity.”
